The landscape of the fashion industry has changed dramatically, transforming vastly through the help of social media and multi-label commerce websites. Now previously small and lesser known brands have been given a platform to connect to consumers and showcase their designs. The Malaysian fashion industry in particular has been on the rise, growing and improving these past years mostly through the efforts of local talents benefitting greatly from the change.
Here are inspiring stories of four rising Malaysian designers who have taken the fashion world by storm with their dazzling takes on art of footwear.
Christy started out working full-time at a pharmaceutical company back in 2010 while moonlighting as a part-time shoe designer, displaying her designs on a Facebook page she had set up back in 2012. Her big break happened when she won the 2013 inaugural Alliance Bank Bizsmart SME Innovation Challenge.
Now as the founder and CEO of her own label "Christy Ng Shoes", she runs an online footwear company that specializes in handmade bespoke shoes, wedding shoes, high heels and more. Recently a 3D “Design Your Own” engine was introduced on the website allowing potential customers to swap colours, sizes, fabrics and more things to customize and create their ideal pair. Yokie and Yoke Sin Theam
Coming from humble roots, sisters Yokie and Yoke Sin Theam, started their own collection after being inspired by their grandfather. The sisters began the business handling every aspect, from designing to marketing the brand; all whilst travelling to and fro from KL and their family’s factory in Ipoh.
"Yoke and Theam" collections are known for their plays with colours and textures, featuring both masculine as well as feminine elements making them very unique and different. Their designs spot chunky, fierce-looking features on their sandals and platforms in cooperating the use rubber for their shoes making it more durable and sturdy. The "Nelissa Hilman" footwear label focuses on shoes designs that celebrate women and emphasizes on updated-classic designs that carry a sense of youthfulness, without compromising on either comfort or craftsmanship. Each pair is made with sustainable materials, practicing positive social and environmental practices.
Established back in 2012, the brand is credited to popular especially among working professionals. Despite the growth it has experienced, Nelissa Hilman still offers hands-on and add-on services such as restoration work and repairs for their customers. Ordinarily established back in 2008 as online fashion store, "Kiss and Tell" is now e-commerce site that offer shoes, apparel, and accessories.
Michelle Soo, the founder of the brand, started her journey selling clothing and shoes both as a hobby to pass the time and to fund her college fees during the days blogspot. Deciding then to design her own shoes as she found that it was super hard for her to find size 3 shoes in the market.
